Sebastiao Jose de Carvahlo
Carvahlo made his name in the rebuilding of Lisbon after the disastrous earthquake on All Saints Day - 1755. He rose in power and influence becoming the Marquis of Pombal and soon dominating the weak King Joseph I. He turned his power against the Church - having been influenced by his diplomatic service in London. He was interested in the subordination of the Church to the State in England, seeing the Anglican Church as a model. He saw the Church, particularly the Jesuits, as having a detrimental effect on Portugal as a trading empire and the intellectual progress of the Enlightenment. As soon as he was powerful enough he started a savage attack on the Society of Jesus.
